Understanding Your Main Water Shutoff
What a main shutoff does and where it tends to be located.
What a main shutoff does
Your main water shutoff stops water flow into your home. Knowing where it is and how to turn it can limit damage if a pipe or fixture leaks.
Common locations
Locations vary by property. It may be near where the water line enters the home, in a utility area, a garage, a crawlspace, or near a water heater. It may be a wheel valve or a lever ball valve. Not every property is identical, so it's worth locating yours before you need it.
Turning it safely
Only turn the shutoff if you can access it safely and it is the correct valve for your water line. If you're unsure which valve controls your home's water, ask before relying on it during an emergency.
